LONESOME Nº1: YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE
A CHRONICLE OF ART POETRY MUSIC AND CULTURE: Olafur Eliasson takes Times Square, A LONESOME EVENING at Neue House, and Ilka Scobie on Martha Diamond at the Aldrich Contemporary.
November 2nd: We’re up in the bleachers of Times Square at five to midnight as nearly every digital billboard synchronizes. Slow, soft light radiates over the sudden hush and unusual calm. Lifeworld by Olafur Eliasson takes footage of the iconic intersection that has been temporally and spacially blurred to 'offer a radically different perspective on the immediate environment.’1 (Nightly through Nov. 30, 2024, concurrent with Olafur Eliasson: OPEN, the artist’s immersive exhibition at The Geffen Contemporary, MoCA LA up through July 2025 and Your psychoacoustic light ensemble shown through Dec 19 at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, NY. A LONESOME EVENING
Join us tomorrow evening, November 20th, at Neue House for A LONESOME EVENING with Penny Arcade, Ilka Scobie, Jeffrey Cyphers Wright, Jordan Galland, Katherine Gleason, and Ingrid Jacobsen. Until then, please enjoy this poem by Penny Arcade, this song by Jordan Galland, and this poem by Ingrid Jacobsen that I am thrilled to nominate for the Pushcart Prize.
Deep Time: Martha Diamond at the Aldrich Contemporary
Visit the Aldrich Contemporary Museum in Ridgefield, CT to see Martha Diamond: Deep Time. Martha Diamond died last year. Her work is enjoying a well-deserved posthumous heyday. The only shame is that this masterful painter didn’t experience these accolades in her lifetime. Watch Ilka Scobie, Anne Waldman, Joel Shapiro, and Phong H Bui discuss Martha’s work in the included video by Brooklyn Rail. Through May 18th, 2025
ON LONESOME PRESS
In a society mired in loneliness, LONESOME PRESS creates community through our stories, our struggles, and the beautiful pain of art-making. In so doing, we create connection and hope. Harnessing our deep roots in the international arts, our goal is to bring poetry and the creative arts to a broad audience who might not otherwise encounter such vital work. LONESOME is a new mom in Arizona nursing her four month old, wondering if she'll write poetry again. LONESOME is a haiku that captures the reality of Black motherhood in America, an Asian man's experience of visibility, who has it and who doesn't. A famous artist who swears he's just a failed poet made the sculpture that graces our cover: Night Scene, a monument to hidden grief and shadow loss. Two leading fashion designers discuss their drive to push the fashion industry, by hook or by crook, to greater sustainability, and the strain they feel as working mothers.
LONESOME is a celebration of life, a meditation on loss, and foremost, the elevation of poetry, fine art, music, and culture into a bookform art object in itself. LONESOME Nº1 YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE is offset printed, signature bound, hardcover, hand-numbered, hand-signed and personally inscribed. There are two limited editions of 500, one numbered in black ink, and one in red. We are independent, international, and intergenerational. From established names to newcomers, all are welcome here.
in partnership with Times Square Arts Midnight Moment and Circa.
